Make it comfortable

Make Keyfolk easy on your eyes, calm to watch, and comfortable with the way you use a computer.

Keyfolk follows your device’s light or dark setting by default, the story included. To choose for yourself, say in a dark room on a laptop set to light, open the menu and choose Appearance. Each press steps through System, Light, and Dark. Your choice applies at once on every page and stays after a reload. System hands control back to your device.

Motion in Keyfolk is gentle: lines type themselves out, slides slide sideways, a cheer grows and fades. If your device is set to reduce motion, Keyfolk follows it without asking:

  • slides change without sliding;
  • teaching pictures hold still on the pressed key (Play again shows the movement once more);
  • cheers appear and fade without a pop;
  • the hint doesn’t pulse.

Nothing you need is shown by motion, flashing, or colour alone.

  • Every control is a real button or link with a name a screen reader can read: the menu and its rows, choices, and Press … buttons.
  • When you arrive at the home page or a chapter, a screen reader announces where you are and starts at the page heading.
  • While the menu is open, Tab stays inside it, and closing it returns you to the menu button. Escape closes open panels one at a time (keyboard controls).
  • Cheers and each new friend’s name in a mini-game are announced. A wrong key is silent on purpose.
  • Every form has labelled fields and explains any error in words, right next to the field.
  • The About, FAQ, Terms, and Privacy pages work even with JavaScript turned off.

If something doesn’t work with your assistive technology, tell us. We treat it as a bug, not a feature request.

Moving between pages never flashes a half-built screen. Either the next screen simply appears, or you see a calm loading screen for a couple of seconds. If a chapter won’t load, see get unstuck.
